World Athletics Certified Track Engineering

Professional track and field athletics require highly calibrated surfacing. Running surfaces must absorb impact energy to protect athletes' joints and muscles, while returning energy to propel them forward.

Elite International Sports is India's leading sports engineering specialist in **synthetic running track construction**. Working in compliance with the **World Athletics (formerly IAAF) Performance Specifications**, we deliver premium, state-of-the-art running track installations across municipal stadiums, military academies, universities, and schools.

Our tracks utilize advanced polyurethane elastomers and premium EPDM/SBR granules. A professional running track must have high friction resistance, uniform thickness, spike resistance, and excellent elasticity in all weather ranges. These parameters ensure athlete safety, support peak speed generation, and enable long-term surface durability.

Whether laying a **Full Polyurethane (Full Pour) System** for Olympic-tier stadiums, a **Sandwich System** for university complexes, or a cost-effective **Structural Spray Coat System** for regional sports academies, our civil engineers manage the entire base-foundation and top-surfacing cycle with laser precision.

Performance Specifications & Biomechanics

World Athletics requires running tracks to fall within specific biomechanical comfort ranges. Force reduction (shock absorption) must be between 35% and 50%. This helps reduce the risk of acute impact stress on tendons and ligaments.

Force Reduction & Energy Return

Our tracks are designed to absorb vertical impact forces, compressing slightly and expanding to return kinetic energy to the runner, aiding speed and endurance.

All-Weather Slip Resistance

Specially textured top layers ensure high friction levels in wet conditions, preventing slips and allowing spikes to grip efficiently.

High Tensile Strength

Elite polyurethane materials resist tearing from standard athletic running spikes (up to 9mm length) without structural delamination.

Water Drainage Permeability

For permeable tracks, rainwater drains directly through the surface layers to sub-grade channels, ensuring no surface ponding after rain.

Key Features of Elite Running Tracks

  • 10+ years expected lifespan under standard maintenance

Types of Synthetic Running Track Systems

We install three primary categories of polyurethane track systems to fit different playing standards and budgets:

Full PU System (Solid Pour)

The premium, impermeable standard. Constructed using two separate layers of poured liquid polyurethane mixed with EPDM granules, cured to form a seamless solid rubber elastomer. Recommended for international championships and major stadiums.

Sandwich System

An impermeable, high-performance system. Features a base layer of SBR rubber crumbs mixed with polyurethane binder, sealed with a pore-filler, and topped with a solid pour polyurethane layer embedded with EPDM granules. Highly popular for university and elite training facilities.

Structural Spray Coat System

A cost-effective, water-permeable system. Composed of an SBR/polyurethane base layer finished with a high-pressure spray coating of PU binder and fine EPDM granules. Popular for school grounds and training facilities due to its excellent cost-to-performance ratio.

Prefabricated Vulcanized Tracks

Manufactured under factory settings in rolls, then bonded directly onto the asphalt sub-base. Offers extreme uniformity in thickness and density, though installation requires precise joint control.

Construction and Surfacing Pipeline

Building a running track requires extensive civil engineering to prevent base shifting or undulation:

1. Geotechnical Site Grading

Testing subgrade compaction. Grading the site using laser-controlled dozers to establish official drainage slopes (less than 1% lateral slope per World Athletics guidelines).

2. Drainage Channel Construction

Installing pre-cast concrete slot drains along the inner perimeter of the track to collect and divert surface water runoff.

3. Sub-base Preparation & Gravel Base

Laying a geotextile weed-barrier membrane followed by two layers of crushed stone aggregates, compacted to form a stable base.

4. Asphalt Base Paving

Laying two layers of hot-mix asphalt (dense binder course and wear course) using electronic pavers to ensure a flat sub-base surface.

5. SBR Base Layer Application

Applying a polyurethane primer, followed by laying the SBR rubber crumb base layer (10mm thickness) using an automated heated paver.

6. EPDM Wear Layer Installation

For sandwich systems, sealing the base layer and casting a 3mm self-leveling polyurethane layer embedded with colored EPDM granules (1-3.5mm sizing).

7. Precision Line Marking & Testing

Laser-marking lanes and starting lines using UV-resistant polyurethane paint, followed by field certification tests.

Materials Used in Synthetic Tracks

Polyurethane Binder

High-grade solvent-free polyurethane binders engineered to withstand moisture and heat cycles.

EPDM Rubber Granules

Virgin peroxide-cured EPDM rubber granules (1-3.5mm) for lasting wear resistance and color.

SBR Rubber Crumbs

Recycled SBR rubber crumbs, graded and dedusted to provide bulk elastic cushioning in base layers.

Hot-Mix Asphalt

Grade 60/70 penetration asphalt concrete mix laid with precise grade controls to provide structural strength.

PU Sealer Coat

Two-part polyurethane sealer to fill base pores, preventing top liquid polyurethane from leaking.

Line Paint

UV-stable polyurethane line marking paint with high reflection to ensure lane visibility.

Advantages of Synthetic Tracks

Joint Protection

Calibrated force reduction minimizes muscle fatigue, joint shock, and shin splints.

Speed Optimization

Consistent elasticity provides stable footing, helping runners generate maximum push-off force.

UV & Heat Stable

Polyurethane materials are engineered to maintain mechanical properties in temperatures up to 55°C.
